China Agro-chemical Industry Faces Restructuring
2010-3-1

China cold spring restrains the intensity of insect pest; the domestic pesticide consumption decreased as a result. Meanwhile, the international market has not fully recovered from Economic crisis. According to custom statistic, China pesticide export did appear larger decline at the end of 2009.

Hitting by the big slump in global market, many enterprises start to sell internally instead of export. “Price war” becomes increasingly fierce in domestic market. Those downstream formulation plants reduce great part of stock. Things become even worse at the third quarter. The price level didn't go up as high as the raw materials including most intermediates, the overall profit margin shows decline once again.

Look at the data, pesticide industry slowly increased by 4% compared to the year before. Annual profit droped down by 27.8%; average price of pesticide imports during the whole year increased by 14%. Meanwhile the average price of exports decreased by 33%.

The industrial adjustment seems inevitably. Chinese government now seeks for public opinion on restructuring. Medium-sized and small enterprises with inadequate environmental inputs would be discarded from the market. Industry concentration expected to increase.

GM Crops Coverage Boost Across Continents
2010-2-27

Before Europe and the United States scientists have concluded that GM technology is safe, Chinese scientists in such a short period have received two security approvals for GM rice and one security approval for GM corn. This is the first time Ministry of Agriculture issued security certificates for GM rice, marked the history in China. However, the debates aroused as many has questioned the safety issues when it relates to the staple of Chinese people.

At the same time when the world is seeing China embraces GM technology, Brazil narrowly surpassed Argentina as the second largest grower of genetically modified crops after the US in 2009. That was due to a 35.4% increase in GM crop plantings in Brazil to 21.4 million ha. Despite EU’s agaisnt GM seeds policy, Monsanto now has strategically planned their market penetration into larger markets.

Whether or not GMO will be widely accepted in most countries in the future, one thing we are sure now is that in long term our pesticide market will always be influenced by the GMO development due to different patent of usage of the pesticides.

China Won Glyphosate's Anti-dumping Battle in EU
2010-2-27

The EU Commission announced on 13th February 2010 that the abolishment of anti-dumping measures applied to Glyphosate originated from China is being extended for another one year. The related HS codes are 29310095 and 38083027.

Since October 1995 the establishment of anti-dumping investigation to Chinese Glyphosate, the EU Commission had came into final conclusion in February 1998 to carry out all the measures to limit the importation. And they reexamined this measure again in February 2003, came out with the same result. But five years later, they abolished the anti-dumping duty on Chinese Glyphosate and lasted for 9 months.

Due to the attitude from the European Commission this year, we believe Glyphosate will be sold well in 2010 especially for export.
